Interior Folds Part 2: Rectanglular folds

When making more complex book fold designs you end up needing to make interior folds.  I have already discussed how to do a triangle interior fold.  If you want a flat internal folded area, you need to make a rectangular interior fold.  I use these for the interior spaces of letters, and if I, like on my Star Pattern, I want the space defined by the fold to have a flat surface. There are two kinds, the simple and three-part rectangular fold. Here is a video tutorial about simple rectangular folds.  You can use the simple kind for most things, but if you are making a deep or long interior fold, a three part rectangular fold gives the folded page more structure.

Rectangular internal folds

Simple Rectangular Fold

Use the pattern to mark the top and the bottom of the internal fold

Make two cuts into the page:

o One at the top and one at the bottom of the internal fold area.

o Cuts should be perpendicular to the outer edge of the page.

o Ensure both cuts are made to the same depth.

Fold the resulting flap back toward the spine of the book.

Three-Part Rectangular Fold

Use this method for internal folds larger than ~1 cm.

Provides extra structural support to prevent sagging.

1. Use the ruler to mark three points on the internal fold area:

        o Top, bottom, and center.

2. At the center mark, cut into the page to a depth of ½ to ⅔ of the final desired depth.

3. Make diagonal snips from the center cut to the top and bottom depth marks.

4. Fold back:

o The two side flaps created by the diagonal cuts.

        o The triangular bottom flap.

The Star Pattern has triangle folds for the
outside of the lower rays, but rectangle
folds to make the inner circle shape.
